Fun With Chocolate

The Young Explorers Program (Ages 7-10 years)

The first 21st century program that looks at building skills like critical thinking, comprehension, creativity and innovation, early business concepts, financial literacy, collaboration, and communication. This program helps children use technology as a tool to finally deliver a presentation on what they worked on.

Module 1 – All About Chocolate

Week 1

June 15th

Introduction followed by an icebreaker game. Children will be divided into groups, and will choose a name for the same

June 16th

Screening of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Part I
This will be followed by questions related to the movie. There will also be reading comprehension from the book – Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

June 17th

Screening of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Part II
This will be followed by questions related to the movie, including a junior program on movie appreciation and film criticism

Week 2
Children will be required to bring in digital cameras for 2 days

June 18th

Illustrate a comic strip They will draw their favourite scene from the movie/book
Imagination at work: Everything in the Chocolate room was made of sweets and chocolates. They have to imagine that the Think Station centre is also made of sweets and chocolates. They will then describe this to the audience

June 22nd

Introduction to chocolate making
A short introduction to how chocolate is made followed chocolate fractions. This will be followed by a make your own chocolate related food recipe
Activity 2: Few basic photography tips

June 23rd

Visit to a chocolate factory
Children will be required to take photographs while on their factory visit

June 24th

Chart making – Children must detail the visit and the entire process of making chocolate.
They will then take part in a creative writing activity on their visit to the chocolate factory

June 25th

EXPLORE SCIENCE: Changing states of Matter
1. Changing states of matter
2. Data collection – tabulating the time taken for different pieces of chocolate to melt in the mouth
Module closing: Review and discussions, GAMES.

Module 1 – All About Chocolate

Week 1

Screening of The Hundred Foot Journey
Children will learn the basics of critiquing films. They will then write a movie review for a newspaper

Week 2
Children will be required to bring in digital cameras for 2 days.

June 18th

Illustrate a comic strip They will draw their favourite scene from the movie Imagination at work: If they had to make a movie, what would it be on? Which aspect would be most important and why? Write a draft of the same.

June 22nd

Introduction to chocolate making
A short introduction to how chocolate is made followed chocolate fractions.
Preparing for the outdoor visit – discussion of the video that they need to develop.

June 23rd

Visit to a chocolate factory
Children will be required to bring a camera that will allow them to take videos – alternatively we will provide them with an iPadfor their factory visit

June 24th

Discussion about the visit
Working on a script for their video

Teams will work on their script and discuss this with mentors – choosing their theme and area of focus for the presentation

June 25th

Video editing – Children will get a chance to work with an editing professional to edit their movies on the restaurant visit. Recording of voiceovers

Activity 4: Survey design for pricing and kind of chocolate (each group must gather information)

Activity 1: Creating an advertisement jingle for your chocolate (or a role play of a movie advert for your chocolate)
Optional: Creating a print advertisement for your chocolate
