Sources of Energy

Renewable and Non-renewable Sources of Energy

Energy that we use comes from either renewable or non-renewable sources. Renewable energy is available continuously. No matter how much we use it renewable energy does not run out. Wind, sun and water are all sources of renewable energy.

Simply Put

Renewable > Unlimited and Non-renewable > Limited

Non-renewable sources on the other hand are limited in supply. They can either not get replaced or takes far too long to be replenished. Fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy. Fossil fuels are made over millions and millions of years. We are at the risk of running out of this energy if we don’t conserve.

Petroleum, coal, natural gas and kerosene are all fossil fuels

Warning

Fossil fuels like petroleum are remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago and got buried deep down in the Earth. Since all living things are made of carbon, fossil fuels too have carbon. When we burn them we release carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas. Adding excessive amounts of greenhouse gases will cause the Earth’s atmosphere to trap more heat, resulting in global warming.
